All systems go for Swaffham Prior CLT!
Sun 01 Jun 2014
Swaffham Prior is 8 miles north of Cambridge. As a consequence of this location, house prices have risen over the last 10 years and housing stock coming onto the local market is relatively low. The average house price in Swaffham Prior is 10% higher than the district average.
All of which makes staying in the village difficult for those families looking for larger accommodation, children still relying on parents to provide housing and elderly residents seeking single storey accommodation.
A housing needs survey was done which identified that 13 households were in need of help to continue to live in Swaffham Prior.
Three local landowners came forward who wanted to see the local people benefit from having some affordable houses in their village and were willing to help financially to make it happen.
A steering group got together and contacted CLT East for help in setting up a CLT which would ensure that the assets would always be held locally. By using the CLT set-up grant available from East Cambridgeshire District Council, the CLT was set-up in record time.
Now only 8 months later, the CLT together with the developer and a local Housing Association have applied for planning permission for 20 homes on the site of which 8 will be affordable houses.
A record breaking achievement as far as we know!
