What We Do

We provide a one-stop-shop of technical advice and support to community led housing groups across the East of England. Groups and individuals approach us at various stages of the journey, some needing general support and some with a specific ask. Whether you are a Cohousing group in Cambridge, a Community Land Trust in Norfolk, or a Charity in Essex, here are some of the key areas in which we can help:

Early Stages

  • Introductory meetings with you or your group, to explain the various forms of community  led housing and explore what you are trying to achieve
  • Choosing a legal form and drafting a governing document
  • Legal Incorporation, liaising directly with solicitors
  • Building a strong Trustee board and maintaining good governance

Community Engagement

Community engagement is the main pillar for any community led housing group. We can assist with:

  • Public events
  • Building a membership base, including membership forms and policies
  • Newsletters
  • Websites, social media and press coverage
  • Collecting community feedback
  • Evidencing local support

Land & Planning

  • Site search and call for land
  • Support and advice in land negotiations, including introducing relevant consultants where needed
  • Advice on planning policy and process
  • Advice on evidencing local Housing Need
  • Attendance at pre-application planning meetings

Every group will need a mix of grant and loan funding in the different stages along their journey. We can help you with:

  • Seed-corn funding to get the group first set up
  • Pre-development funding to secure a site and get planning permission
  • Development funding and/or long-term funding to fund the build
  • Feasibility and viability assessments

Partnerships & the build

  • Advice on entering into partnerships with Housing Associations and/ or developers
  • We help to facilitate a strong working relationship with Local Authorities, particularly Housing and Planning teams
  • We act as an advocate for community-led housing groups
  • Signpost other relevant sources of information and toolkits
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer learning, including visits to other community led housing projects
  • Provide ongoing advice and support via telephone, email and attendance at Board meetings

We provide a bespoke tenancy management service to local community led housing groups. We can also assist in drafting relevant policies, such as an Allocations Policies.
